The HK Standard: Friday, March 09, 2007 - Hong Kong and Macau deputies elected to the National People's Congress will be disqualified if they are found to be members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China or the Falun Gong, according to deputies attending the ongoing plenary sessions of the NPC and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in the capital. "Generally speaking, it is not common to see some people being screened out for political reasons in the vetting process. But it's crystal clear that those who are members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China should not hold office as NPC deputies," he said.
"Falun Gong members are also forbidden to stand for election as NPC deputies although the organization is not banned in Hong Kong. But the vetting exercise is conducted in accordance with national laws. Those deemed subversive or preaching evil beliefs should be disqualified from the top legislature." (more)
